Arnica montana of the Family Asteraceae is endemic to Europe, growing in nutrient poor silicaceous meadows up to nearly 10,000 feet. It has tall stems up to 2-1/2 feet supporting a single yellow flower head about 5 cm in diameter appearing from May to August.
Arnica montana is often grown in an herb gardens.
It contains helanin, which is a sesquiterpene lactone that is responsible for its anti-inflamatory properties but also may cause skin irritation.
In Europe the rhizome is used as the medicinal part but in North America the flower is used.
